Using Photoshop to Adjust the Tone
Photoshop has several ways you can adjust the tonal characteristics of an image:
Tonal Correction
Tonal correction is used to make the pixels within the image span a greater range of values from dark to light. It is especially useful for enhancing the mid-tone details as well as making things "brighter" without losing any detail. Getting more detail from your imagery adds more interest for the viewer.

Adjustment Levels
Take a photo at dusk or low light and another during high-noon in full sunlight. Save the originals somewhere safe (so we have "before" and "after" versions) and work on copies. Use your preferred technique (adjustment layers/curves/ levels) to enhance the copies so there is detail in the shadows and detail in the highlights.
